Layout

This was a layout in which I chose the photos, pull quote, and arranged the entire layout from the story already given. I though it was important to represent both a white elderly couple and a black elderly couple since the article says that tension revolving around race fades with age. The other photo was added to show elderly people engaging in social activities, something the article says helps the elderly remain happy. I then placed the pull quote in order to balance out the two page layout.

Logo Design

For the logo for the magazine "Wanderer" I wanted to keep all letter lowercase in the Gil Sans Ultra Bold to be simplistic yet eye-catching. In this way the logo can adopt the cover picture and other cover logos that may be needed without overpower them, but still the name of the magazine is clear. By adding the alternating lines of color, I wanted to create not only a fun color palette, but also a slight sense of movement in the letters, reflecting the name of the magazine itself.

Photo Restoration

This is the restoration I performed on a photo of a painting. I evened out the coloring and recreated the coloring of the holes found in the photo to make it look as if it is in better condition.

Infographic

When editing my infographic, I still wanted to keep it simple and easy to read, so I added another information box explaining what the infograph is saying. I then added more color to make it more visually appealing, and in some ways easier still to understand. I also changed the title to be more understandable and to the point.


For this infographic I wanted the information to appear simply and easily readable. I didn't want to much distracting from the information at hand.

Anxiety: A Practice in Color

This piece represents anxiety. I immediately knew that the bold warm colors of red, yellow, and orange would give a feelings of urgency and fear that anxiety entails. The shapes are angular to add to that feeling, and the black scribbling cloud shapes represent the mind racing and the muddled thoughts that result from anxiety. Once it came to the actual shape and movement of the piece, I remembered what a friend once told me when she was experiencing extreme anxiety: it's like you're in the middle and everything is racing at you and you can't escape it because everywhere you turn there is more coming at you.

Black and White Composition

For this composition I wanted the eye to move up the page to the upper right corner. For this I used the circles getting smaller and lighter to draw the eye up. To balance this movement I created heavy lines in the upper left corner and also had slight movement down the page with the rotated squares. The heaviness of the black circle in the lower right and the black lines in the upper left balances the composition diagonally. I created the differing grays throughout the circles, squares and lines to give the composition more depth than if it were a simply black and white. This difference in color also allows the black objects to appear heavier and have more of an impact.
